Overview

Ahmedabad, on the Sabarmati river in Gujarat, was founded in 1411 by Sultan Ahmed Shah. In 2017 its historic walled city, with its pols (traditional neighbourhoods), mosques and carved havelis, became India's first UNESCO World Heritage City. The Sabarmati Ashram, Mahatma Gandhi's home during the freedom struggle, is one of its most visited places.
