Overview

Kochi (Cochin) is Kerala's great port city, where spice traders from Arabia, China and Europe arrived for centuries. Fort Kochi's Chinese fishing nets, Portuguese and Dutch buildings, St Francis Church and the Jewish quarter of Mattancherry with its synagogue tell that story.

Today Kochi is Kerala's commercial capital, home to the Cochin Shipyard, a busy container terminal and the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, India's best-known contemporary art festival.
