Overview

Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, is known as the "city of nawabs". Its skyline of domes and gateways – the Bara Imambara with its maze-like Bhool Bhulaiya, the Rumi Darwaza and the Chhota Imambara – recalls the 18th–19th century nawabs of Awadh, patrons of poetry, music and Kathak dance.

The city is famous for its tehzeeb (refined courtesy), chikankari embroidery and Awadhi cuisine, from galouti kebabs to slow-cooked biryani. The Residency, scarred by the siege of 1857, is a reminder of the First War of Independence.

Getting there & around

Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport and Lucknow Charbagh railway station connect the city with all major cities, and the Lucknow Metro serves the north–south corridor.
