Overview

Varanasi, also called Kashi and Banaras, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and the spiritual heart of Hinduism. Its ghats – stone steps leading down to the Ganga – come alive at dawn with bathers and boats and at dusk with the Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat.

The Kashi Vishwanath temple, the narrow lanes of the old city, Banarasi silk saris and the music of the Banaras gharana make it unforgettable. Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon, is only about 10 km away.

Getting there & around

Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport (Babatpur) and Varanasi Junction railway station connect the city to the rest of India.
