Jana Gana Mana
The national anthem, composed in Bengali by Rabindranath Tagore. The Hindi version was adopted as the national anthem by the Constituent Assembly on 24 January 1950.
Jana Gana Mana is the national anthem of India. It was written in a highly Sanskritised Bengali by Rabindranath Tagore, the Nobel laureate poet, and was first sung at the Calcutta session of the Indian National Congress in 1911. The Constituent Assembly adopted the Hindi version of its first stanza as the national anthem on 24 January 1950.
The full version takes about 52 seconds to sing; a short version of the first and last lines is used on some occasions. When the anthem is played or sung, the audience stands to attention as a mark of respect.
