Overview

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a chain of more than 500 islands in the Bay of Bengal, closer to Myanmar and Indonesia than to mainland India. Turquoise water, coral reefs, white beaches such as Radhanagar on Swaraj Dweep (Havelock) and dense tropical forests make them India's favourite island destination.

The islands are home to indigenous communities such as the Great Andamanese, Onge, Jarawa, Sentinelese and Shompen, whose areas are protected.

The Andaman group lies to the north and the Nicobar group to the south, separated by the Ten Degree Channel. Barren Island has India's only active volcano. Indira Point on Great Nicobar is the southernmost point of India.
