The Sangam literature of the early centuries CE describes the Chera, Chola and Pandya kingdoms. Madras (Chennai) was one of the first British settlements in India. The state was formed as Madras State in 1956 and renamed Tamil Nadu in 1969.

Geography

The Eastern Ghats and Western Ghats meet in the Nilgiri hills. The Kaveri delta is the agricultural heart of the state, and the long Coromandel coast faces the Bay of Bengal. The state receives much of its rain from the north-east monsoon between October and December.
