Ganga

Officially designated Reported

The Ganga is India's longest river flowing within the country and is revered by millions of people.

The Ganga was declared India's national river in 2008. Flowing more than 2,500 km from the Gangotri Glacier in the Himalaya to the Bay of Bengal, it supports hundreds of millions of people and is revered as a goddess in Hinduism.

The designation came with the creation of the National Ganga River Basin Authority to coordinate the river's cleaning and conservation, a task continued today under the Namami Gange programme.
